By Josh Franklin, Roswell Daily Record — The Roswell football team beat Mayfield 52-15 on the road Saturday. The win secured the Coyotes’ 2026 District 2-5A title ahead of their final regular-season game against Goddard.

The 2026 district title is the Coyotes’ first since 2024 and fifth with coach Jeff Lynn at the helm. Notably, Roswell won the Class 5A state title in 2024, defeating Artesia 41-22 in the championship game.

The Goddard football team fell to Artesia 28-27 at the Wool Bowl Friday. The game was delayed by weather at the end of the third quarter. Rockets’ coach Art Bolaños and Bulldogs’ coach Jeremy Maupin later agreed to call the game after rain and lightning continued through the night.

Artesia secured the win with a blocked extra point after an explosive Goddard offensive drive that could have tied the game in the final moments. Rockets running back Isaiah Montoya broke off a 60-yard run on fourth down, giving Goddard a first-and-goal from the two-yard line. Moments later, Goddard quarterback Nate Vazquez punched in a two-yard rushing touchdown before the clutch block by the Bulldogs (5-4, 5-1 2-5A).

Up next, the Coyotes (8-1, 6-0 2-5A) and Rockets (4-5, 3-3 2-5A) square off at the Wool Bowl at 7 p.m. Friday. Roswell is the designated home team in the latest cross-town rivalry game.

Weather to potentially affect New Mexico soccer state tournament

Saturated field conditions at the Cielo Grande Sports Complex have already postponed both Roswell and Goddard soccer games earlier this season. With rain in the forecast for Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, soccer teams scheduled to play games at the complex for the New Mexico state soccer tournament could see their games postponed.
