The Old Time Fiddlers Contest was … a big attraction at the Chaves County Courthouse, with a large crowd overfilling the courtroom, which was only about half as large as necessary to accommodate the crowd. There were 18 fiddlers in the contest and it was a difficult task for the judges to determine the winners. The judges gave first prize to Dot Massie, second prize to Chanter Stockley and third prize to Dempson Lewis.
The Johnson No. 1, a water well being drilled for the city near the water plant was down to a depth of 1,100 feet, drilling in sandstone. At a depth of 1,070 feet the drill went out of the blacklime, the formation encountered from the 400-foot level, into a salt seep and then into the sandstone. It was decided by members of the city council, the mayor, the city engineer and members of the citizens committee to continue drilling for at least an additional 100 feet in hopes of finding more water.
A total of 7,952 voters were registered in Chaves County prior to the November 1926 election.
