Josh Franklin, The Roswell Daily Record — The Gateway Christian Warriors football team travels to Melrose this afternoon to face the No. 2 seed Buffaloes in the NMAA eight-man football quarterfinals. The No. 7 seed Warriors will look to reverse the outcome of their Oct. 9 meeting, when Melrose won 58-8.
Gateway (5-4, 1-3 District 3) enters the rematch after cruising to a 51-0 mercy-rule win over No. 10 seed Questa at home last week. Anthem Russell had a monster game against the Wildcats, with rushing touchdowns of 54, 33 and 31 yards among his top plays on the day.
Melrose (5-3, 3-0 District 3) earned a first-round bye after securing the No. 2 seed. The Buffaloes last played two weeks ago, closing the regular season with a 40-36 win over Tatum.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Dickie Roybal Field, with a semifinal berth on the line.
