By Melanie Becker-Donovan, Roswell Daily Record — Roswell is set to honor its veterans and their families during the annual Veterans Day parade.

The parade takes place on Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. at the Chaves County Courthouse lawn and the ending point will be at the Wool Bowl. United States Army veteran Bob Wooly is scheduled to serve as the keynote speaker.

This year’s theme is “Let Freedom Ring,” commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, according to the organizers of the event, the Norman E. Harpole American Legion Post 61.

The legion’s commander, Stephen D. Lee, said that the parade honors veterans across all branches and generations of military service. “If we’re going to hold on to our freedoms, they’re the ones who are going to defend it,” he said.

Lee emphasized that military service also involves sacrifices by veterans’ families, who often spend extended periods apart from loved ones serving the country. “They’re not just signing up for no reason. They’re signing up to defend this nation,” Lee stated.

The event also includes presentations of Quilts of Valor by members of the Pecos Valley Quilters, which recognize selected veterans for their military service.

The New Mexico Military Institute band is expected to perform along the parade route. Scouts from Troop 2 will participate in the ceremony, including the Pledge of Allegiance. Cadets from the New Mexico National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy are expected to carry a large American flag. Depending on participation, cadets may also carry the New Mexico state flag.

The Chaves County Honor Guard is expected to present the colors, while Tom Blake provides music. The Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars are also expected to participate.

Lee also highlighted the American Legion’s Be the One initiative, which encourages people to reach out to veterans and help prevent suicide by ensuring they know they are not alone. The initiative is part of the organization’s national effort to reduce veteran suicide.

Veterans interested in participating do not need to register in advance but should arrive around 8:30 a.m. Residents are encouraged to attend the ceremony and parade. Parking may be limited near Pioneer Plaza because of ongoing work, with spectators encouraged to consider parking on the east side.
