By Jesse Jones — Drivers traveling through the East Mountains may want to ease off the gas on N.M. 14. New speed cameras are already tracking drivers, with warnings in effect through early November. After that, it will cost a heavy foot a fine of $100.
Bernalillo County announced Oct. 21 that drivers speeding on N.M. 14 will receive warnings instead of fines through Nov. 9. After the warning period ends, the county may mail speeding drivers a $100 citation or they can choose to complete four hours of community service with the county’s Clean Team for a $25 fee.

The county installed the N.M. 14 cameras northbound before Largent Circle and southbound before Penny Lane. Additional cameras on N.M. 333 (U.S. Route 66) are expected to begin issuing warnings later this month, according to the county. They will cover eastbound and westbound traffic between Vista Valle Drive and Barton Road. Cameras on Frost Road will cover both directions between N.M. 14 and Pine Ridge Road.
The county hopes the cameras will slow drivers and help prevent serious and fatal crashes. Officers will review the evidence before the county sends a citation.
