By Kevin Hendricks, The Paper. — Rio Rancho knitters and crocheters no longer need to cross the river to stock up. Zia Yarn, the city’s first dedicated yarn store, opened Saturday, Oct. 17, at The Block, and its owner comes with a sweet backstory.

Owner Robyn Hill is the granddaughter of Albuquerque’s original Candy Lady. She says she wants the shop to carry forward her grandmother’s knack for making people feel welcome.

“My grandmother built something that brought people joy,” Hill said.

The shop sells yarn and fiber arts supplies, offers classes and hosts Social Stitching Lounges, where makers can bring their projects, meet other crafters and spend time together.

Hill received permission from Zia Pueblo to use the Zia name and symbol in the store’s branding, according to a news release.

Hill also runs 505 Craft Collective, a nonprofit that offers community fiber arts programs for people who might otherwise face barriers to taking part.
