Today is Friday, Nov. 6, and we’re gearing up for a busy weekend of playoff football and state cross-country action.

Earlier this week, I previewed the Goddard Rockets’ first-round matchup against the Highland Hornets in the Class 5A football playoffs. Beyond the players highlighted in that preview, Coach Bolaños pointed to defensive communication as a key focus against Highland.

He expects to see some non-traditional offensive formations from the Hornets and emphasized the need to account for every Highland player.

We’ll also be watching the Gateway Warriors as they travel to Melrose this evening for an NMAA eight-man football quarterfinal matchup.

On Saturday, our attention will turn to Chaves County runners competing in the NMAA state cross-country championships in Albuquerque.

Don’t think we forgot about the top-seeded Roswell Coyotes football team. While they have a bye this weekend, their next opponent will be decided when No. 8 seed Santa Fe and No. 9 seed Cibola meet at 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner will travel to the Wool Bowl next week, and we’ll bring you a preview once the opponent is set.

Until then, keep an eye out on a sideline near you. If you spot a navy blue OKC Thunder hat, don’t be shy — say hi!
