By Terri Harber, The Roswell Daily Record — When the Roswell Finance Committee meets this week, there will be a new presentation added to its agenda: the “Grant Writer Monthly Update.”

The committee meets on Thursday at 2 p.m. at City Hall, 425 N. Richardson Ave., upstairs in the Mike Mathews Conference Room.

This report is several pages long and was prepared by Vanessa Borunda, who creates these funding applications for Roswell city government projects and other endeavors that require money to at least begin, if not to partially or fully complete.

This first update begins with submissions from May and proceeds to the end of October. It also provides information about upcoming grant applications and warns about matters that require a plan to ensure that good opportunities aren’t lost.

More specifically, the document also “summarizes active grant and capital outlay funding reported by city departments, including project purposes, expenditure and obligation information where provided, and applicable reversion dates,” the staff report also explains.

City officials began talking about creating a grant-writing position in earnest after the October 2024 storm and flood disaster as well as during preparations for the National Championship Air Races, especially leading up to September 2025, when the event debuted at the Roswell Air Center. However, it has been a topic of interest at City Hall for a few years, especially when fiscal-year budgets were being discussed and prepared.

Both Borunda and Sean Davis, Roswell’s grant coordinator, are part of the city’s Finance Department. There are also employees in other departments with grant-writing skills.
