Countywide early voting ended on Saturday evening. An early voting site inside Roswell Mall enabled people to vote and shop or eat a meal under one roof. Saturday was also Halloween, and some people — especially children — donned costumes. Roswell’s only other early voting location was at the Chaves County Clerk’s Office.
The county’s pre-election day turnout reached 8,730, or 22.42% of its registered voters. Of those people, 7,946 were early voters and 784 were absentees. Early voter totals, by party registration, were Republicans, 5,261, or 60.26%; Democrats, 2,392, or 27.4%; and those described as “others” or “declined to state,” 1,005, or 11.51%, according to the county’s Turnout Command Center.

Among the 779 absentee ballots accepted, 257 were mailed, 28 were replaced with in-person votes and five were rejected, adding up to 1,067.
The 22.42% early voting participation rate displayed Saturday by the Turnout Command Center was derived by dividing Chaves County’s count of 8,730 early voters by 38,974, the number of Chaves County registered voters, from the Friday afternoon statewide list of New Mexico Secretary of State’s registered voter totals, by county.
The polls remain closed today. But on Tuesday at 7 a.m., Election Day, they operate until 7 p.m. No walk-in voting or ballot drop-offs will be accepted after the polls close.
