By Kevin Hendricks — Trick-or-treating in the East Mountains and Estancia Valley usually means long driveways and longer walks between porches. This weekend, over a dozen trunk-or-treats bring the porches to the parking lot. Events run from Friday afternoon through Saturday night in Edgewood, Moriarty, Estancia and Cedar Crest.
Edgewood starts things off Friday, Oct. 30. Town staff will hand out candy inside Town Hall from 3 to 5 p.m. The town’s flyer invites families to meet the people who run town services. Route 66 Elementary follows with its trunk-or-treat from 7 to 8 p.m.
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and hosts are taking full advantage. Estancia High School’s first PTO trunk-or-treat opens at 3 p.m. Most other events start between 5:30 and 6 p.m., so families planning a multi-stop night should map their route before the sugar kicks in.
Several hosts are adding a cause to the candy. Graceland Portable Buildings and the Sandia Mountain Rainbow Girls ask guests to bring one non-perishable food item for the community food bank to their 11th annual Trick or Treat Shed to Shed. RV Sales west of Moriarty charges $1 or a can of food per person for its Trick or Treat Trailer to Trailer. Its Bennett’s Haunted House costs $2 and benefits Moriarty Rotary scholarships.
Estancia Methodist Church will serve free hot dogs and Frito pies. The Town of Edgewood adds carnival games and a costume contest at Venus Park.
