Keep off: The grass at Pioneer Plaza will be reseeded and possibly fertilized. The Plaza closes starting Friday and is scheduled to reopen on Nov. 30.

Beginning on Friday, Pioneer Plaza will be shut down for a month as city crews reseed the grass.
The tender green areas will be isolated so that people stay off the lawns until the growth is mature. The grass should be able to withstand people and animals standing and moving around by Nov. 30, the day scheduled for the lawns to be available to the public again.
The poles for American flags that marked the 250th anniversary of the United States will be removed from the lawn.
Snow fences are going to be erected so the emerging grass is protected, said Jim Burress, the city’s special services director.
The grass will probably receive fertilizer treatment during its rest period — a monthlong respite from feet, claws and baby carriage wheels.
If it gets ”too much colder, we can’t do it,” Burress said Tuesday.
The parking areas directly west of the plaza will remain open.
The city’s Christmas on the Plaza celebration is scheduled for the following night, Dec. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., with the tree lighting ceremony scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
