“It’s never too early for Halloween” was the battle cry Friday as pint-size ghouls, sprites and dinosaurs stormed the J.O.Y. Center for one of the season’s first trunk-or-treat events.Cars packed the parking lots and spilled down North Montana Avenue, stretching two blocks west on 19th Street.
The “cake walk” stole the show. Kids and grownups circled up for a shot at winning giant sheets of cake and platters of donuts.

Other fun stations included toss and bowling games that were supervised by the students of the NM National Guard Youth Challenge Academy, who were volunteering this year.
More than 30 businesses handed out sweet treats, and the candy kept coming until the sun went down.
Refreshments were provided by Stellar Satellite mobile coffee truck, where older teenagers in the CasaKids (Southeast New Mexico Court Appointed Special Advocates) program learn to manage money and work a business. New this year were the Drip Bowl food truck and a Caliche’s frozen treats station.
When the sun set in a true New Mexico fiery spectacle, happy kids and adults left with bags of sweet loot.
