The Goddard Rockets swept the Roswell Coyotes in three sets Thursday at the Coyote Den, winning the crosstown volleyball rivalry match and completing a 2-0 sweep of the season series.

“It’s always good to beat Roswell,” Goddard head coach Andy Luikens said. “The energy from the first set was great. Anytime you beat Roswell, it’s good.”

The Rockets (14-3) got progressively better throughout the match, winning the first set 25-23, the second 25-20 and the third 25-11. Roswell (6-11) kept the first two sets competitive but couldn’t keep pace in the third.

“I think we played a little sloppy and didn’t pass too well in the first two games,” Luikens said. “We had a few hitting errors, but I was pleased with the third game. We served tough and that’s what got us the win.”

Thursday’s match was the last for both teams before district play. Luikens said he isn’t looking too far ahead, focusing instead on getting his players quality reps and trying different combinations.

“We’re not looking too far ahead, but we want to get some other girls in and try some different things,” Luikens said. “I wanted to do more of that. I got to do that in game three. I thought I’d get to do it more in game one and two.”

Up next, Roswell hosts Clovis (10-7) on Tuesday at 6 p.m., while Goddard travels to face Lovington (2-12) on Thursday at 6 p.m.
