Roswell sophomore Debrice Ashung needed just five days to make his mark in two sports: a 98-yard touchdown on the football field and a hat trick on the soccer pitch.

From Oct. 2-6, the two-sport Coyote showed just how dangerous he can be in either uniform. After scoring the touchdown Friday, Ashung delivered a hat trick Tuesday to bring his season total to 35 goals, tying Roswell’s single-season record.

“He’s so special. He’s on course to break the school’s single-season goal scoring record,” Roswell soccer head coach Robert Madrid said Oct. 6. “He’s having a really special season, and that sends him back to the top … scorers in New Mexico.”

Ashung makes it look easy. Keeping him ready to compete in both sports takes coordination behind the scenes.

That planning was on display last Friday, when Roswell football head coach Jeff Lynn limited Ashung’s second-half playing time ahead of a Saturday soccer game.

“We’re able to do that at Roswell because we’ve got great relationships as coaches, and you know we pulled him there in the second half,” Lynn said Oct. 2. “Didn’t play him much in the second half because we know he’s got a big soccer game (Saturday). So he’s special. … So super proud of him.”
