Heavy rain from what’s left of Hurricane Polo is causing problems beyond flooded streets and soggy yards in Bernalillo County. Waste Management has paused residential trash collection after severe weather closed a landfill the company uses.
Bernalillo County said Waste Management notified the county that the landfill is temporarily closed because of the severe weather. Residential curbside trash collection is on hold until the landfill reopens.
The county urged residents to leave carts at the curb. Waste Management will resume collection once weather conditions improve and the landfill reopens. Residents can find more updates through Waste Management.
The City of Albuquerque also temporarily closed the Cerro Colorado Landfill today after heavy rain saturated the ground and made it unsafe for collection trucks and other heavy equipment. City crews are still making as many residential pickups as possible, but some Wednesday collections will be delayed. The closure also forced the Eagle Rock Convenience Center to close early today once its collection trucks reached capacity. The Don Reservoir Convenience Center will remain open as usual.
The city said crews will continue collections where conditions allow while monitoring the landfill. With more rain expected overnight, the city plans to provide an update tomorrow.
