By Sara Atencio-Gonzales, The Paper. – A new documentary series celebrating stories of hope, healing and resilience in New Mexico has released its first trailer and is inviting residents from across the state to share their experiences.
“Through the Fire” will feature New Mexicans telling personal stories about overcoming life’s challenges, including family struggles, relationships, careers, mental health, addiction and finding their place in life. According to a press release, the series is designed to focus on “the triumph, not the trauma.”
The project is narrated by Albuquerque native Sara Tapia-Tomer and produced by fellow Albuquerque resident Jake McCook in partnership with NMCO Studio in Las Cruces. Two episodes have already been filmed in and around Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Española and Raton.
In the press release, Tapia-Tomer explains that the project aims to create a place where people can share stories of both triumph and hardship in hopes of inspiring others. McCook said he hopes the documentary will highlight New Mexico’s resilience instead of focusing on the state’s negative rankings. Tina Ballew, co-founder and creative director of NMCO Studio, emphasizes that sharing authentic stories can help reduce shame and stigma while encouraging healing and understanding.
The producers are also seeking partnerships with nonprofit organizations, foundations, local governments and professionals who work in mental health and community support, including counselors, therapists, teachers, parents and advocates.
According to the press release, participants will not have their stories used without their full partnership and permission.
