There’s a new labor of love on display at the Bernalillo Community Museum & Garden. The museum has unveiled a new mural that director Ashley Flores says is intended to recognize local plants and pollinators and acknowledge the town’s agricultural history.

A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the end of an 18-month process that involved ALMA, Albuquerque Apprenticeships for Leaders in Mosaic arts, and participants in the museum’s free community art classes. The Mid-Region Council of Governments supported the projects through its Government Results and Opportunity (GRO) Program.

Flores told the Sandoval Signpost that community members learned to make, glaze and install the tiles that make up the mural.

The design was chosen after four public workshops, she said. Local elementary school children also made field trips to the site.

Flores said ALMA artists and apprentices made the project fun and educational. “They were a delight to work with,” she said. “And extremely talented.” The museum is at 118 Calle Malinche.
