By Sara Atencio-Gonzales, The Paper. – West End Productions is celebrating a major milestone this spring with a return to the production that helped launch the company a decade ago. From May 29 through June 14, the company will stage Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell at the North Fourth Theater, once again starring Jessica Osbourne and directed by Colleen Neary McClure.
For McClure, revisiting the play after 10 years feels especially meaningful.
“Well, it’s our 10-year anniversary,” says McClure. “This was our very first show 10 years ago, and what we’re doing is the same show with the same actress 10 years later, and so that’s part of the celebration.”

Originally written in 1986, Shirley Valentine follows a Liverpool housewife in her 40s who begins questioning the life she has settled into. As Shirley rediscovers her sense of identity and independence during a trip to Greece, the play blends comedy, vulnerability and self-reflection into a deeply personal story.
“It’s a very funny comedy, very touching, very poignant about a woman in her 40s, a housewife who’s seeking her lost identity, and it’s about her journey to self-discovery,” says McClure. “It’s actually a play for everyone who feels like they’ve let the world pass them by, or they let life pass them by.”
McClure describes the production as both “heartwarming” and “empowering,” adding that the play continues to resonate because of its universal themes.
“It’s a highly inspiring play about not wasting your life or any living moment,” says McClure.
This revival also brings a new perspective for Osbourne, who performed the role in West End Productions’ original staging 10 years ago.
“She’s now the right age to play the role,” says McClure. “She was a little young the first time, and so she has a lot more to bring to it, I think, because of that.”
One of the most unique aspects of Shirley Valentine is its intimate connection with the audience. Much of the play is delivered directly to theatergoers through Shirley’s monologues, creating the feeling of a personal conversation.
“There was an audience member at another theater who actually, because Shirley talks beyond the fourth wall, literally talking back to Shirley, because she felt like she was her friend,” says McClure. “It was adorable.”
McClure believes audiences will be especially impressed by Osbourne’s ability to command the stage alone for the entire performance.
“She’s actually on stage for two hours on her own, and that in itself is an impressive feat,” says McClure.
Ultimately, McClure hopes audiences leave feeling inspired. “I want them to go away feeling like they’ve been on this journey with this very normal woman and be inspired by her,” says McClure. “It takes the courage of reclaiming your own life again.”
