A Placitas art gallery opens a new exhibit next month celebrating New Mexico landscapes and the stories behind them — rendered in oil paint rather than words.
Wild Hearts Gallery presents Joan Fenicle: In the Spirit of Haiku from June 2–28, with an artist reception Saturday, June 13 from 1–3 p.m. at the gallery at 221-B State Highway 165.

Fenicle, who has lived in New Mexico since the 1970s, draws inspiration from decades of exploring the back roads and villages of New Mexico and Colorado. The exhibit title reflects her approach: like the Japanese poetry form, each painting distills a single experience — an ancient tree, a village chapel, a dramatic cloudscape — into its essential image.
Visitors get two chances to hear Fenicle discuss the stories behind her work. She’ll speak during the First Sunday ARTScrawl on June 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again at the June 13 reception with fellowship and refreshments.
