Albuquerque – A local nonprofit helping New Mexicans in their most challenging moments can put more money into those services now thanks to a $60,000 donation to zero out their utility bill by converting to solar power.
SunState+, Unirac, and Greentech Renewables installed a state-of-the-art solar array for The Grief Center, a local nonprofit providing groups and grief resources, free of charge, to New Mexicans facing loss and grief. The project began with a $60,000 gift from Franklin E. Wilson, Director of the Foundation for Sustainable Living, in Albuquerque.

The 47.75 kW solar system is expected to save The Grief Center more than $11,000 annually, according to Sun State+. “At The Grief Center, we meet people in some of the hardest moments of their lives, and part of our mission is to ensure no one has to grieve alone. Choosing solar is one way we can honor the generosity of our donors and the trust of the families we serve—by being thoughtful stewards of every dollar and creating more stability for the work that happens inside these walls. Every dollar we don’t have to spend on rising utility costs is a dollar we can put back into compassionate, accessible grief support for children, adults, and families—today, and for years to come,” said Debora Garrison, Executive Director of The Grief Center.
Glenn Felty, CEO of SunState+ and the project’s lead organizer, echoed the sentiment: “The Grief Center provides an essential service for our community, and we were honored to help make this project possible,” said Glenn Felty, CEO of SunState+. “When organizations can reduce and stabilize operating costs through solar, they gain more freedom to focus resources on the people they serve.”
