Pat Davis, Route 66 Independent, Edgewood — Edgewood Mayor Mike Rariden says he will resign his position as mayor and city commissioner next week after finalizing a new agreement to restore long-term fire service to the town.

Following Rariden’s resignation, the town commission will have to appoint a new commissioner to the District 5 seat. That person will be the third person to serve in that office in just over a year. Commissioner Sterling Donner resigned the seat in early 2025 and Rariden was appointed to fill the term. He ran unopposed for the seat in the November 2025 elections and was selected in January by other councilors to serve as mayor.

In his announcement shared with the Route 66 Independent, Rariden said he made the “difficult decision” due to health and family concerns but that he deliberately waited until a new fire service agreement was in place before choosing a date. Last week, Edgewood and Santa Fe County announced that they had come to a multi-million dollar agreement for the county to continue providing fire service after they canceled a previous agreement over disagreements with the town over compensation for those services.
