Placitas artists open their studio doors for free self-guided tour May 8–10
The 29th annual Placitas Studio Tour runs free and self-guided May 8–10 across one of New Mexico's most prestigious studio tours.
Tucked between Albuquerque and Santa Fe at the base of the Sandia Mountains’ northern foothills, Placitas opens 48 artist studios to the public this Mother’s Day weekend for the 29th annual Placitas Studio Tour — free, self-guided and, organizers say, built for collectors.
More than 60 local artists welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days, May 8–10. Visitors can meet artists in their studios and buy directly from them, giving the tour what organizers describe as a treasure-hunt quality unique among New Mexico studio events.
Studios span the full breadth of the Placitas community — from Tunnel Springs and the Village of Placitas on the east to Placitas West and Anasazi Meadows near I-25, with stops through Rancho de Placitas, Placitas Heights, Camino de Las Huertas and Sundance Mesa in between.
The 62 participating artists work across more than a dozen media, including ceramics, steel, wood, mixed media, bronze, collage and jewelry. This year’s brochure cover features work by artist M. Kyle Hollingsworth.
The tour expanded to three days this year to give visitors more time to explore. Only artists who live or maintain a full-time studio in Placitas may participate. The tour is governed by an all-volunteer board and registered as a nonprofit in New Mexico.
