After captivating the state with a thrilling run to the Western Conference Finals in 2025, New Mexico United enters the 2026 season with heightened expectations and a roster built for championship contention.

According to United President Ron Patel, the Black & Yellow drew nearly 200,000 television viewers for last year’s playoff match, a staggering number for a local sports event. The team’s playoff watch party was so packed that fans couldn’t get in, underscoring the fervor that has gripped the Land of Enchantment since the club’s 2019 inception.

“The support off the pitch has been amazing,” Patel told The Paper. “There’s no reason to not be super optimistic about this group.”

Ahead of United’s March 14 season opener in Oakland and March 28 home opener, here’s what you need to know about the 2026 squad.

Sanchez’s Proven System

Under second-year head coach Dennis Sanchez, United has found a winning formula. Sanchez led Las Vegas Lights FC to the Western Conference Final in his first professional head coaching job in 2024, eliminating NMU in the playoffs. United hired him that offseason, and he promptly guided them to another Western Conference Final appearance.

“Dennis has been able to implement his system into our team and bring in players that fit his system,” Patel said. “He’s done it two years in a row with two different teams.”

The roster reflects Sanchez’s vision, with several former Las Vegas players joining the squad alongside other players familiar with his tactical approach.

New Faces, Familiar Core

United announced its preseason roster in late January featuring a blend of returning contributors and strategic additions.

In goal, Kris Shakes returns alongside Cuban national team goalkeeper Raiko Arozarena, giving United two international-caliber netminders.

The defensive line adds UNM product Maliek Howell while retaining Will Seymore, Chris Gloster, Ousman Jabang and fan favorite Kipp Keller, who has signed permanently after spending 2025 with United on loan.

The midfield spine returns largely intact with Gedion Zelalem, Marlon Vargas, Zico Bailey and Valentin Noël. French midfielder Sofiane Djeffal, who played with Noël at youth level, joins as a key addition.

Up front, Dayonn Harris, Greg Hurst and Luther Archimède provide continuity, while new signings Justin Rennicks (New England Revolution), Niall Reid-Stephen from USL League One, and Jake LaCava (San Antonio) bolster the attack. United also announced on Feb. 13 the return of Albuquerque native Christian Nava, a 22-year-old forward who hasn’t played since 2023 after suffering ACL injuries.

United demonstrated its offensive firepower during preseason in Tucson, scoring eight goals across three matches, including a 7-1 demolition of Vision FC on Feb. 5. Hurst, Bailey, Harris and Reid-Stephen all found the net during the Desert Showcase.

Bruce Moves To Bench

One of the most significant changes comes off the field. Club legend Daniel Bruce, who retired after six seasons and 171 appearances with United, has joined Sanchez’s coaching staff as an assistant.

“Keeping Daniel as part of our staff is huge for this club,” Sporting Director Itamar Keinan said in a statement. “There are very few people who understand what New Mexico United represents the way he does.”

Bruce made his mark as more than just a player. Known for his relentless work rate and deep connection with supporters, he consistently entered preseason as the fittest player, winning the annual beep test for endurance.

“His impact was always felt in the locker room because of his energy, because of his heart and his hustle,” Patel said. “To have him around all the time, but now to be able to use the coaching skills he’s grown over the years … I think is a net positive.”

Sanchez echoed that sentiment: “He will continue to be a tremendous asset to our club and our community.”

Stadium Battle Continues

While United prepares for another championship push on the field, its quest for a permanent home remains in legal limbo. The proposed 10,000-seat stadium at Balloon Fiesta Park sits in the New Mexico Court of Appeals awaiting assignment to a three-judge panel.

Neighborhood associations for Wildflower, Maria Diers and the North Edith Corridor have appealed a district court ruling that cleared the project. They argue the stadium would disrupt the North Valley’s rural character, noting the 2012 Balloon Fiesta Park master plan originally prohibited outdoor stadiums due to noise concerns.

District Judge Erin O’Connell dismissed the neighborhood lawsuit in July, ruling the city acted within its authority. After the court denied a rehearing, opponents appealed in August 2025.

The delay pushes any stadium opening to 2028 at the earliest. To bridge the gap, United extended its Isotopes Park lease through 2029.

Under the proposed public-private partnership, the city provides land and $13.5 million for infrastructure while United contributes at least $30 million in private funding. The deal includes a $30 million bond package approved by the City Council in February 2025 and a 20-year property tax exemption. The city projects the stadium will generate net positive tax revenue over time.

Once all appeals are resolved, the project is expected to create 310 construction jobs and 53 permanent positions. Under the 30-year lease, United would pay the city $35,000 annually plus 10% of parking revenue. At the end of the lease, the city takes ownership of the stadium for $1. The team would be prohibited from hosting home games during the International Balloon Fiesta in October.

The city and United call the privately funded stadium a “best-in-class” amenity that fills a local entertainment gap. Beyond 17 annual home games, the stadium is approved for up to 100 events per year, including concerts and festivals.

Despite playing in a baseball stadium, United averaged 9,597 fans per game last season, ranking second in the USL Championship.

Community Impact

Beyond on-field success, United has built deep roots throughout New Mexico. The club visited over 6,000 kids last year in schools, hospitals, community centers and Native American pueblos across the state, according to Patel.

“We’re all about spreading positivity and bringing New Mexicans together,” Patel said. “That’s what makes this thing beautiful.”

As the 2026 season approaches, United’s message to fans is simple: bring a friend to a match.

“If you’ve been to a match, if I could challenge you to bring a friend to a game this year, just so they get their first taste. They will thank you for a long time,” Patel said. “It’s an addictive thing in a positive way.”

The home opener is March 28 at 12:55 p.m. against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Tickets are available at newmexicoutd.com.
