Today is Monday June 16th and it’s hot. Very hot. Like El Paso hot. Our high today of 100ish is the average June afternoon temp down there. Welcome to climate change?

Speaking of welcomes, catch up with our new Student Reporter Abby McDonald who is spending her UNM summer vacation interning in our newsroom. Her first story is one that has could have a 15-year impact on a very important (to us) ABQ institution. More on that below.

City Reporter Jesse Jones is reading up on the mayor’s vetoes of community projects in the city budget and the council’s chance to override him tonight.

And the mayor is asking the council to give a local developer a quarter-billion dollar tax incentive (not a typo). See what that buys nowadays and speak up by email or public comment before the vote tonight.

Thanks bunches: Join me in sending THANK YOU to Areena, Jerry, Raul, Morgan, Steven, Sabrina, Connor, Barbara H. and our sponsors in this week’s editions. Their support last week and this weekend powered our newsroom and this newsletter today. We’re rebuilding local reporting for New Mexico from the ground up and we can use your help. ABQ & BernCo.

What do I need to know about tonight’s city council meeting?

First, veto overrides: City Reporter Jesse Jones reports that last month the council amended Mayor Keller‘s budget proposal by swapping out some of his priorities for theirs. Now he vetoed some of their changes. In an election year when 5 of 9 council seats are up for election, we’ll see if the council flexes its muscle to override his vetoes and restore funding for their neighborhood priorities.

Then, tax breaks: A local developer is asking for a LOT of public money.

Finally, our new Student Reporter Abigail McDonald has the scoop on one of the biggest council votes (in our mind) all year: Councilors will decide whether a deal between The Isotopes and they mayor is good enough to extend their lease on “The Lab” until 2039. See how much it costs the city maintain the best stadium in Minor League Baseball and how much the ‘Topes plan to pay.
