Staff report

The Albuquerque Concert Band will present its annual Bruce Kroken Scholarship Award Concert on April 6 from 3- 4 p.m. at the Eldorado High School Performing Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

This year’s concert will feature performances by two scholarship winners, twin brothers Adrian and Davion Hein from Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho. Adrian, a trombone player, and Davion, a clarinetist, were both selected for their “exceptional musical talent,” according to a press release. Adrian will be attending Oklahoma State University to study Music Education, while Davion plans to major in Music Education and Business Management.

“The thing I love most about music is connecting with whoever is listening and leaving the audience with an impression,” Adrian Hein said.

“Music has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember, and over the past seven years, live dedicated myself to mastering the clarinet—an instrument I chose simply because I love its sound,” Davion Hein said.

The Bruce Kroken Scholarship Award, established in 2004, honors the late ACB conductor Bruce Kroken and provides $1,500 to a New Mexico high school senior pursuing music at the college level. This year, 10 students from the Albuquerque Metro Area auditioned, representing schools from Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties.

The concert will also feature guest conductors Dr. Emily Moss, Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of New Mexico, and Christopher Dollesin, a Graduate Assistant with UNM Bands.

The Albuquerque Concert Band, a 501 c 3 non-profit organization, has been performing in the Albuquerque area for nearly 60 years. The all-volunteer ensemble consists of over 80 members from various professions.
