By Rodd Cayton — The name “Corrales Arts Center” contains certain implications. Charlene Spiegel is happy to dispel two of them and correct a third.

“You don’t have to live in Corrales (to be a member),” Spiegel, president of the organization, told the Corrales Comment. “You don’t have to be an artist. And until a few weeks ago, we didn’t have a center.”

The arts center is celebrating its new digs with a Nov. 15 open house at 4436 Corrales Road, Suite A1. Spiegel said the organization plans to host art classes and other activities in the storefront, formerly occupied by Casa Vieja. She said the location is desirable because it’s in an area of heavy foot traffic and there are complementary businesses nearby.

The arts center will start the weekend with a Nov. 13 members-only grand opening. The Sunday public event runs from 1 to 5 p.m. and will include apple cider, assorted cookies, and other refreshments, Spiegel said local artists have donated a number of items for a silent auction, and that the winning bidders will be announced at the end of the event and on the arts center’s website and Facebook page.

Parking will be available at the nearby Gonzales Field. The arts center is still accepting donations of silent auction items. Any artist interested in contributing to the fundraiser may contact Lisa Goldberg at claygirlgo@gmail.com. Donated artwork may be dropped off at the center on Thursdays between 4 and 6 p.m.
