Roswell became a city of victors over the weekend, with every local high school varsity team in action adding to the win column.

From the pitch

The Roswell boys soccer team claimed the District 4-5A title with a 3-0 win over the Hobbs Eagles on Saturday at the Cielo Grande Sports Complex.

“I can’t put it into words. It’s a lot of hard work since the preseason, just to get here and give ourselves an opportunity,” Roswell head coach Robert Madrid said.

Forward Axel Sanchez opened the scoring in the fourth minute. The Coyotes added two more goals before halftime and held Hobbs scoreless the rest of the way.

The Coyotes also had the community behind them. The program worked with the Roswell Youth Soccer Association to offer free admission to RYSA players wearing their league jerseys, while athletes from other Roswell teams turned out to support them.

“Big shout out to the community. They definitely showed up,” Madrid said. “I’ve never seen a crowd this big for a Roswell soccer game.”

The Lady Coyotes also beat Hobbs 1-0 on Saturday. If they avoid a loss in their final regular-season match, they will give Roswell a sweep of the boys and girls soccer district titles.

On the gridiron

The Coyotes took over the Bulldog Bowl on Friday with a 62-36 win over the Artesia Bulldogs.

Roswell built a 21-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back, finding success on the ground and through the air in what head coach Jeff Lynn called a “good team win.”

Lynn also praised the Roswell fans who made the trip to Artesia.

“They’re great. I mean, the sea of red was awesome (Friday),” Lynn said. “They did a good job for us. So super proud of our entire community.”

Goddard took care of business at the Wool Bowl on Friday, shutting out the Mayfield Trojans 35-0.

Quarterback Nate Vazquez completed 15 of 19 passes for 159 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensively, the Rockets recorded 68 total tackles and two sacks in the shutout.
