Above normal temperatures are about to give way to our first sub-50 degree nights in the Pecos Valley this this weekend.
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque issued freeze and cold weather warnings for most of New Mexico earlier this week as a low pressure system descends over New Mexico from the Nevada and Arizona border area. Low temperatures in Roswell are forecast to drop from 60 degrees on Wednesday to 44 by Sunday. That same system is forecast to bring freezing temperatures to communities east of the Manzano, Sandia and Sangria de Christo Mountains.
“At the same time, a backdoor cold front will race west across New Mexico, resulting
in a strong east canyon/gap wind into the Rio Grande and Upper Tularosa Valleys,” forecasters warned. “A Wind Advisory will likely be required for Thursday afternoon/evening across much of eastern New Mexico to cover the strong gradient winds behind the backdoor cold front.”
NWS also released the fall freeze forecast for the state this week. Roswell has a 50% probability of receiving its first freeze on Nov. 7, a week later than the Oct. 31 average. Roswell recorded its earliest freeze on Sept. 27, 1901, according to weather service data.
