Today is Monday, Oct. 5 and here’s what’s making news in the City of Visionโฆ
Early voting starts tomorrow โ and it’s a big ballot. Hull vs. Haaland for governor. The sheriff’s race. Two contested county commission seats. Four constitutional amendments, including one that would pay state legislators a salary for the first time. Three state bonds, three county bonds. If you live in Sandoval County, you’ll want to read our complete ballot guide before you go. The only early voting site open tomorrow is the county clerk’s office at Idalia Road and NM 528, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Twenty-two sites open Oct. 17.
Sandoval County Indivisible will be outside the polling site with arrows, not placards. The progressive group is running a nonpartisan “Vote Early” rally from 10 a.m. to noon outside the county offices, directing voters to the polls as part of the national No Kings movement’s shift from protest to turnout. More rallies are planned Oct. 17 at four county locations when early voting expands.
Bernalillo put a three-month freeze on data center permits. The town council voted unanimously to pause all data center development approvals while it updates its ordinances. The concern: data centers’ far-reaching effects on water and energy resources in a town that already watched what happened to communities that said yes before they were ready.
Cuba has 24/7 paramedics for the first time โ and a rainbow showed up to celebrate. Sandoval County Fire and Rescue opened Fire Station 34 Friday with a ribbon, a fire hose wet-down and an actual rainbow over the ceremony. Cuba EMS closed after 40 years of service in July; the county stepped in the next day.
