New Mexico communities overwhelmed by floodwaters can now tap up to $3.75 million in state emergency money and call on the National Guard for backup.
Lt. Gov. Howie Morales, filling in for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is out of state, signed five executive orders Wednesday declaring a state of emergency due to flooding across New Mexico. Each order directs the Department of Finance and Administration to release $750,000 to the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM).
“Communities across New Mexico need help staving off these torrential floodwaters, and they need it now,” Morales said in a statement.
The money can cover temporary lodging, shelter, health care, food and transportation needed to protect lives and property, according to Executive Order 2026-077. The orders also direct the Adjutant General to deploy the New Mexico National Guard as needed.
The cash comes with a catch: Local governments must prove the cost of their response exceeds their available resources. DHSEM coordinates all requests.
With more rain in the forecast, state officials urge residents to follow local officials’ instructions, evacuate immediately when told and never drive, walk or swim through floodwaters.
