Seeing a hot air balloon up close usually means a 4 a.m. alarm and a traffic jam. On Monday, Los Ranchos will line up 66 of them right on Fourth Street, and you can sleep in.
The Globito Glow in the Village runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, with Globitos lining Fourth Street from Schulte Road to Pueblo Solano Road. The free event celebrates the Route 66 Centennial, according to a press release.
Globitos are 20-foot-tall, remote-controlled scale models of hot air balloons, complete with working burners and flown by expert operators.
Why 66? Do the math. Fourth Street carried the original Route 66 through the village. Board Director Magda Martinez-Baca said the glow highlights “a tight-knit community, vibrant local businesses, and a deep connection to our history.”
Expect kids’ activity stations, live music, beer gardens, food trucks and participating shops and restaurants staying open during the event. A free shuttle runs continuously from the Los Ranchos Antique Mall, 7901 Fourth St. NW. Parking costs $5 at the Chamizal Trailhead on Fourth Street just south of Osuna Road.
