Sandoval County Animal Care Services has once again been named a no-kill shelter, a distinction the county has held for several years running, according to a press release from the county.
The Best Friends Animal Society, a national nonprofit that works with more than 5,500 shelters and rescue groups to end shelter killings, announced the designation Aug. 21. “We are so fortunate to have the support of leadership and an amazing, tireless group of professionals and volunteers who help us achieve our sheltering policy that starts with this simple truth: every animal is an individual,” said Kimberly Jaramillo, the department’s assistant director.
Best Friends’ Angelita Sampaio said the honor reflects the county’s dedication and urged residents to pitch in. “We urge New Mexicans to adopt, foster, advocate, and volunteer with their local shelters,” she said.
The recognition comes as the county builds a new Animal Care Center in Bernalillo, set to open in mid-2027. The 7,350-square-foot main building will house 50-60 dogs and 12-20 cats, with a separate 3,000-square-foot building for large dogs, a quarantine area, space for large animals like horses and livestock, and a public dog park.
