East Mountain drivers headed to weekend shopping or work in Albuquerque will need to add a little more time to their plans for the next few weekends. NMODT is beginning a project that will reduce I-40 to just one lane through the Tijeras Canyon from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. every weekend through mid-June.
During construction, I-40 will be reduced to one lane on either the eastbound or westbound lanes through the work zone, depending on the construction schedule:
- Westbound I-40: May 16 – 17
- No Work Over Memorial Day Weekend
- Eastbound I-40: May 30 – 31
- Eastbound I-40 June 6-7
- Eastbound I-40 June 13
“The lane closure is necessary to provide a safe work area and protect both crews and motorists while repairs to the bridge are completed,” said NMDOT. But, due to the location and nature of the repairs, there is no viable detour available, so motorists should plan to delays and be patient.
Motorists should expect significant delays during work hours and are encouraged to plan ahead. To minimize impacts to weekday commuters, the contractor is only performing work on weekends, NMDOT says.
