Wymer outspent, outraised Piland and won big in mayoral election
Paul Wymer raised nearly $92,500 and spent more than $84,000 to win Rio Rancho's mayoral runoff — nearly double his opponent's campaign spending.
Paul Wymer’s larger campaign war chest helped fuel a landslide victory in Rio Rancho’s mayoral runoff Tuesday, with unofficial results showing him defeating Alexandria Piland 63% to 37%.
Wymer’s “Paul Wymer for Mayor” committee raised $92,418 and spent $84,394 through the final pre-election reporting deadline, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Rio Rancho City Clerk’s office. Piland’s “Elect Alexandria” committee raised $77,997 and spent $42,587 — less than half of Wymer’s total expenditures.
Wymer’s biggest donors included the New Mexico REALTORS® Political Action Committee ($5,000) and A Management Corp, an Albuquerque-area contractor ($3,000). The Republican Party of New Mexico provided a $2,704 in-kind contribution for mailer expenses. Wymer’s largest spending categories included direct mail, digital billboard advertising and radio.
Piland’s donor base leaned heavily on smaller individual contributions, mostly in the $50–$500 range from Rio Rancho and Corrales-area residents, along with a $500 contribution from a Rio Rancho donor and a $200 contribution from Bernalillo County Treasurer Tim Eichenberg.
Wymer raised $12,492 and spent $24,293 in the final reporting period alone — nearly four times Piland’s final-period fundraising of $3,444. Piland spent $7,143 in the same stretch.
