A pair of Sandoval County projects will share in the latest round of state trail grants.

Los Amigos de Valles Caldera and the Pueblo of Santa Ana’s Tamaya Wellness Program will receive $46,000 and $99,999, respectively, from the Outdoor Recreation Division of the Economic Development Department of New Mexico.

Los Amigos de Valles Caldera says its grant will help support trail signage improvements at Valles Caldera National Preserve. That means more than 20 trailhead signs along the parkโ€™s 25-mile road system and at perimeter entry points.

The Outdoor Recreation Division is awarding nearly $6 million to entities across the state. The agency says that money will build and enhance more than 355 miles of trails and support 288 jobs in 21 counties. An additional $4.8 million in matching funds brings the total public investment to $10.8 million, according to a department news release.

โ€œExpanding trails and outdoor access is a smart way to grow New Mexicoโ€™s outdoor economy sustainably โ€” an economy that adds billions to our stateโ€™s GDP,โ€ Cabinet Secretary Rob Black said. โ€œThese projects provide jobs, keep our forests and watersheds healthy and encourage economic growth, especially in our rural communities.โ€

Awarded projects include creating educational trail signs, constructing ADA-friendly trails and campsites, designing and constructing bike trails and pump tracks, constructing a pedestrian bridge, feasibility studies and more.
