Rio Rancho firefighters get $26K state grant for new gear
Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue is receiving $26,000 in state funds to equip 11 new firefighters with protective gear.
Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue will receive $26,112.50 in state equipment funding to outfit 11 new firefighter positions, part of a $1.6 million grant program the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration announced.
The funds will cover personal protective equipment for new hires, including turnout coats, pants and helmets. Rio Rancho is one of 30 fire departments statewide selected for the equipment grants.
“Equipping our members with modern, reliable gear is also an important factor for candidates when selecting an agency,” Fire Chief James Wenzel told The 528, adding that the funding reinforces the department’s commitment to supporting new personnel from day one.
DFA funded 190 new firefighter and EMS positions across New Mexico in 2024. The public safety workforce initiative supports local governments with recruitment, retention and equipment costs for new hires.
