An Edgewood-based company that organizes burro-powered races will compete Thursday for $15,000 in cash prizes in a statewide pitch competition for outdoor recreation businesses.
New Mexico Pack Burros is among eight finalists at Adventure Pitch Fest, a state-sponsored event showcasing dozens of outdoor businesses at the Albuquerque Rail Yards. The pitch battle begins at 6 p.m., with the event running from 3 to 7 p.m.
The company aims to revitalize rural communities through burro racing, according to the state’s Outdoor Recreation Division, which is organizing the competition.
Seven other finalists will compete in the fast-paced pitch battle, including businesses offering therapeutic horseback riding, backpacking meals, agritourism tours, fly-fishing equipment and llama-guided backcountry treks.
“In New Mexico, the best ideas start outside — where people, passion, and even the occasional llama come together,” said Karina Armijo, director of the Outdoor Recreation Division.
The free, family-friendly event is open to the public and will feature a showcase of outdoor businesses throughout New Mexico. Attendees who check in will be entered to win a package to Truth or Consequences, donated by local businesses including Riverbend Hot Springs, Truth or Consequences Brewing and Passion Pie Cafe.
Tickets are available at bit.ly/adventurepitchfest or at the door.
