The Edgewood Police Department will partner with the New Mexico Bighorn Gun Club to offer a free handgun training class exclusively for women on Oct. 12.
The all-day event, titled “Women & Handguns,” will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Edgewood Police Department’s classroom at 23 E. Frontage Road, followed by range time from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the New Mexico Bighorn Gun Range.
All instructors for the program are women, and participants do not need to own a handgun to attend, according to organizers.
The curriculum will cover self-defense tactics, responsible gun ownership, firearms safety and maintenance, and safe shooting techniques. All instructors hold NRA certifications, and some are also certified as Torrance County Sheriff’s Office deputies and NRA Range Safety Officers.
“Learn how to defend yourself – Refuse to Be A Victim,” the program advertises, referencing an NRA personal safety program.
Participants must be at least 16 years old. Registration is required due to limited class size.
The training is not an NRA certification course or a certified concealed carry course, organizers noted.
