The town of Mountainair has begun a comprehensive street resurfacing project this week, affecting three major thoroughfares.

Work began Wednesday on Sunset Avenue from Beal Street to Third Street, Cedardale Avenue from Highway 60 to Main Street, and Third Street from Highway 60 to Highway 55. The project is expected to be completed by Thursday.

The streets will be micro-sealed curb-to-curb, marking the first time in decades that complete street reconstruction will be performed rather than partial repairs, according to Mayor Peter Nieto.

“For decades, many streets were only partially redone,” Nieto said. “This time, thanks to curbs already in place, they will be going curb-to-curb to ensure stronger, longer-lasting streets.”

Officials are asking residents and visitors to avoid the affected roads during construction. Residents living on the south side of Third Street should use Fifth Street and Forest Avenue behind Dollar General and Family Dollar to reach the highway.

Parents accessing the elementary school should not park on Sunset Avenue and instead use Corbett Avenue for drop-off and parking, officials said.

The mayor emphasized that parking should be avoided on all three streets even when work is not actively taking place, as parked vehicles can cause delays when crews arrive.

The project addresses longstanding infrastructure issues. Public Works crews cleared areas, revealing two to four feet of previously unpaved sections along street edges, which Nieto said contributed to pavement deterioration over time.

Town Hall can be reached at 505-847-2321 for questions about the project. Residents will be connected with the mayor or Public Works Supervisor Carl Archuleta.
