New Mexico legalized recreational cannabis in June of 2021, and the first licensed sales of recreational cannabis in the state began a year later in 2022. After some initial oversaturation in the market, businesses have consolidated in the last three years, leaving a still sizable mixture of national chains and local mom-and-pop dispensaries in the Duke City to cater to our cannabanoid cravings. While it is legal for anyone 21 and over to purchase cannabis for either medicinal or recreational purposes, there are a handful of rules you should be aware of. While there is no possession limit at home, in public you are limited to buying and possessing no more than 2 ounces of cannabis, 16 g of concentrate and 800 mg of edibles. Public consumption of marijuana remains illegal. You can’t do it outside, in public parks, on the streets, etc. Whether you’re smoking, dabbing, vaporizing or consuming it, you must do it in a private setting. You are not allowed to consume product inside a dispensary either. There are a handful of cannabis consumption lounges in town, however, which are licensed and have proper equipment to deal with smoke. Some offer amenities like coffee, snacks and even live music. Neighborhood dispensaries and consumption lounges are spread all across the city, but concentrate heavily in the University area (along Central Ave. and Yale Blvd.). Up Menaul Blvd. and north on San Mateo Blvd. also offer a wide variety of shops, from the funky to the upscale.
