Sandia National Laboratories has reduced its workforce by 400 employees in a restructuring plan that will conclude by the end of October.
The restructuring plan was announced in June, when Sandia National Laboratories announced that its workforce would be reduced by 2% by early fall, according to a statement from Corporate Communications Specialist Kenny Vigil. Since then, 300 employees have been approved for voluntary separation packages, and 100 temporary employees have been let go.
The 300 employees who received the voluntary separation program received a severance package, while the temporary employees did not qualify, according to the statement.
“Having the right number of people in the right roles is essential for Sandia’s success,” Vigil wrote in the statement. “Sandia is taking proactive steps to ensure the labs’ long-term sustainability and continue delivering on its critical national security mission.”
Its sustainability plan includes limiting external hiring and facilitating placements internally, Vigil wrote.
The main site, located in Albuquerque, saw 66% of the total reductions. The other 24% of the reduced workforce came from Sandia’s location in Livermore, California.
“Sandia understands this is a challenging time for impacted employees and their colleagues,” Vigil wrote. “Resources, such as the Employee Assistance Program, are available to help them navigate these changes.”
