A local welding company has been cited by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) for serious workplace safety violations that resulted in a worker falling through a skylight.

According to state records, during an inspection following the incident, regulatory agents found that employees were exposed to significant fall hazards while working on a roof near skylight openings. The company allegedly failed to provide proper fall protection, such as harnesses, guardrails or skylight covers.

Investigators also determined that Gantts Welding did not provide employees with training to recognize and avoid fall hazards. Workers on the roof were unaware that protective measures were required to prevent falls, leaving them vulnerable while performing high-risk tasks.

While the citation does not state whether the worker was injured, it notes that they fell through a skylight that was more than 20 feet off the ground.

Both violations are classified as “serious” under state and federal occupational safety regulations, with each carrying a proposed fine of $4,966 for a total of $9,932.

Gantts Welding is based in Bosque Farms and serves the Albuquerque area. It provides services like pipe and stainless steel welding, fabrication and equipment repair.
