A collaborative rescue effort between Edgewood Animal Control and an Albuquerque-based wildlife organization has given an injured Red-tailed Hawk a second chance at recovery.
Edgewood Animal Control Officer Juan De La Rosa recently responded to a call reporting an injured bird of prey in the area. Upon arrival, Officer De La Rosa found a Red-tailed Hawk that had sustained injuries of unknown origin.
Red-tailed Hawks are native to New Mexico and are a common sight throughout the Edgewood and East Mountain regions. These majestic raptors play a crucial role in the local ecosystem as apex predators.
Recognizing that the injured hawk would require specialized veterinary care and rehabilitation, Officer De La Rosa reached out to Hawks Aloft, an Albuquerque-based rescue organization dedicated to protecting wild birds and preserving their natural habitats.
Working together, the animal control officer and Hawks Aloft representatives were able to safely capture and secure the injured raptor. The bird was then transported to the Hawks Aloft facility, where it is currently receiving treatment and care during its recovery period.
The successful rescue highlights the importance of cooperation between local animal control services and wildlife rehabilitation organizations in protecting New Mexico’s native bird species. Hawks Aloft continues to monitor the hawk’s progress as it works toward a full recovery and eventual release back into the wild.
Community members who encounter injured wildlife are encouraged to contact their local animal control services, which can coordinate with appropriate wildlife rehabilitation organizations to ensure proper care for native species.
