Families with school-age children in the East Mountains have a chance to connect with neighbors and celebrate the new school year at a free community ice cream social this Saturday.
First Baptist Church Tijeras will host a Back to School Ice Cream Celebration from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, offering families an opportunity to create their own ice cream treats with multiple flavors and toppings. The event will also feature games and social time as summer transitions to the school year.
The timing coincides with the recent start of the 2025-26 school year for local children, who attend Albuquerque Public Schools and began classes Aug. 7.
“We offer several opportunities to serve our local East Mountain community,” the church states on its website. The congregation operates “an active ministry to provide much-needed food for children in our local East Mountain community” and runs a food pantry that “operates multiple days per week.”
Saturday’s ice cream celebration takes place at the church located at 11820 NM-337 in Tijeras. Families can contact the church at 505-281-3342 or fbctijeras@hotmail.com for more information about the event.
