Severe flooding in Cedar Crest has forced the temporary closure of a beloved local institution, the Talking Talons Thrift Shop, located on State Highway 14. The flooding caused significant water damage to the interior of the shop, prompting staff to announce a closure of at least two weeks while repairs are underway.

โ€œDue to the store flooding Saturday night, we will be temporarily closed,โ€ the shop posted on social media Sunday morning, July 13. โ€œIt will most likely be at least a week.โ€

That estimate has since been extended as the damage assessment revealed the need for a full replacement of the storeโ€™s flooring.

โ€œWe donโ€™t know how much all the repairs will cost, but so far we do know itโ€™s in the thousands of dollars of damage to the store,โ€ said Terrence Randall, an executive team member of Talking Talons Thrift Shop. โ€œThere are a lot of surrounding businesses and residences that are looking at hail damage. There’s a lot of roofing activity going on. And insurance, they’re looking at things having to do with that storm.โ€

Though the store is still closed for shopping, Talking Talons is continuing to accept donations with a few caveats. The store is still gratefully accepting donations during regular hours, Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is also seeking cardboard boxes to aid in organizing and storage.

โ€œWe are temporarily closed, but donations are still very much needed,โ€ staff emphasized. โ€œWe appreciate your generosity.โ€

The flooding in Cedar Crest, caused by heavy monsoon rains, has impacted several homes and businesses in the area. Talking Talons, a nonprofit shop whose proceeds support wildlife and conservation education through Talking Talons Youth Leadership, is one of many small businesses now facing a challenging recovery.

โ€œSo many people have dropped by, offered support and are missing us being open and we are so grateful for the community,โ€ Randall said.

The store is located at 12159 State Highway 14 N. For more information, residents can contact the shop at (505) 286-9611 or via email at info@talkingtalons.org.

Updates on reopening will be posted to the thrift shopโ€™s Facebook page as progress continues.
