President Donald Trump has a plan to “make Indians great again,” starting with requiring sports teams that abandoned racist Native American names to return to those roots.

Trump posted on social media this past weekend that he would like to condition plans for the Washington Commanders NFL team to build a new stadium in the nation’s capital on the team changing its name back to the Washington Redskins, then doubled-down on that suggestion on Sunday saying the Cleveland Guardians, formerly the Cleveland Indians with “Chief Wahoo” as their mascot, should return to their old moniker. Both teams, and dozens of others, recently abandoned their former names with racist Native American connotations under public pressure.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is eliminating nearly $1 billion in Tribal programs from the federal budget, including job training programs that help between 40,000 to 50,000 Native Americans annually access job training programs, according to Tribal Business News.

  1. of course ridiculous name games in exchange for billions in tribal programs and maybe he wants to throw in some shiny beads and small pox blankets.

  2. He’s so disgusting and such a liar. Indigenous people are not wanting any of this. It’s just white supremacists saying they get to decide what celebrating Native American history and heritage means.

  3. Here’s betting neither Ben nor the nameless author are actual Indians. My money is on white liberals.

    1. Perhaps you’re right, Dean, but I’m more interested in what you think about the news story regarding Trump’s comments about sports team names and his administrations elimination of funding for Native job training programs. It seems we get caught up in criticizing each other and rarely get down to talking about the real issues at hand. I’m not native, but I have thoughts on this. If the report is true then I feel that the Native nations have already weighed in on how they feel about names like “Redskins” and “Indians” and it’s not Trump’s place to try and reverse that. It seems to me to be a misuse of the power of the office he’s been entrusted with to try to force his personal opinions on the people. He doesn’t like to hear other peoples opinions when they don’t align with his but he’s adamant about having his own opinions supported. As for the job training funding I’m interested to hear what the Native nations think about the impacts of that. I feel like the move to “government efficiency” has been little more than an arbitrary elimination of funding for departments and programs to make it look like the administration is making a positive impact on government spending and at the same time free up funds to be spent arbitrarily on departments and programs the administration is in favor of. But that’s just my opinion.

  4. Changing the names is meaningless and a needless expense to American tax payers. The training program is a better use of funds. You wait he, the president, will want something from the indigenous people of America. I’m my opinion.
