The New Mexico State Fair is now accepting applications for one of its most popular culinary competitions: the Original Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge.

Local restaurants have until noon on June 30 to apply for a shot at claiming the coveted title of New Mexico State Fair Green Chile Cheeseburger Champion.

Eight restaurants will be selected to compete in the sizzling showdown, which is scheduled for Sept. 8, on North Main Street at the State Fairgrounds.

The annual event, presented by The New Mexico Gas Company, has become a staple of fair festivities, showcasing the state’s beloved signature dish: the green chile cheeseburger. The contest draws enthusiastic crowds, hungry for both bold flavors and fierce competition.

“New Mexico is world famous for our green chile cheeseburgers and there is no better place than the State Fair to host the battle of the burgers,” said Dan Mourning, General Manager of the New Mexico State Fair. “We can’t wait to carry on the tradition, bringing the top restaurants in the state together to vie for the coveted title.”

The competition is open to brick-and-mortar restaurants located in New Mexico. Food trucks and temporary vendors are not eligible. Selected participants will face off in front of a panel of judges and an enthusiastic crowd, cooking up their best version of the classic New Mexican burger.

Restaurants interested in competing can find the full list of rules and application details online at statefair.exponm.com.

The winner not only earns bragging rights, but also gains a boost in statewide recognition and the satisfaction of topping one of New Mexico’s tastiest traditions.
