Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. It became a federal holiday in 2021.
The Albuquerque City Council voted unanimously in 2015 to declare Juneteenth, an annual holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the end of the Civil War and slavery, an official holiday by the Albuquerque City Council.
In observance of Juneteenth, some city and county offices and services will be closed on Thursday, June 19.
311 Community Contact Center, ABQ Ride, Animal Shelters, the BioPark, Pools, Tennis and Trash Pickup are all open and operational on Juneteenth.
Bernalillo County offices, excluding emergency services, will be closed on Thursday.
