Calliope Gallery in Madrid is set to host an opening reception for “Outsider Artist” Chandon Banning on Saturday, June 21, at 4 p.m. Banning will be exhibiting her current paintings, with the exhibit running through August 11.
Chandon Banning, an American abstract painter and multidisciplinary artist, originally from Los Angeles, will be showcasing her work. Banning describes her art education as simply “I took an art course in High School.” She is primarily a self-taught artist. Gallery owners Michael Lancaster and Barbara Harnack, both veteran artists, were surprised by her lack of formal training given her sophisticated style. Banning currently resides in Santa Fe, where she enjoys a creative lifestyle. She works primarily with oil paint and encaustics to create large-scale abstract paintings. Over her 30-year career, she has also gained experience in fine art, scenic art, architectural finishes, photography, and interior styling.
The exhibit highlights Calliope Gallery’s dedication to RAW (Art Brut) and veteran artists.
“I was drawn to the sensitive and respectful quality of Chandon Banning’s art as well as her joyful and gregarious approach to life and art,” Harnack said.
Lancaster and Harnack founded Calliope Gallery in 2018 to support Northern New Mexico artists. The gallery represents nearly thirty artists, most from the region.
