Mayor Jack Torres has been the mayor of Bernalillo for 14 years. He’s seen his fair share of ups and downs in the town, and has worked with his share of Town Councilors over the past decades.
The Signpost spoke with Torres about the upcoming election and what some of the biggest challenges councilors will face in the next few years, regardless of who wins.
Signpost: Bernalillo has seen a lot of economic growth over the past decade. What do you think are some of the biggest challenges you and future leaders will face as part of that development?
Mayor Torres: “I think we need to look at responsible growth for the future. There are a lot of factors to look at with expanding our city. It is important that we have enough affordable housing and jobs for local people. We also need to think about water conservation. All of this growth means we need to make sure that we are responsible for our water use.
I’m excited to work with future council members on what they see as challenges for the Town and how we can all work together to make sure this is a place that businesses want to come to, but also how to keep our unique characteristics that make Bernalillo our home.”
